Analysis & Planning category
In the secluded Patagonian fjords of Chile, a 570-acre promontory is being developed with a commitment to ecological integrity. The site, flanked by the Corcovado National Park and the Tic Toc-Corcovado Gulf Marine Park, represents the only accessible area within a vast conservation territory established by the visionary Douglas Tompkins. The project is driven by a desire to honor Tompkins’ conservation legacy and to foster a deep connection with nature.
The overarching goal is to preserve Tic Toc as a place for reflection on our relationship with the natural world. The Framework Plan was developed around supporting the owner’s conservation goals and enhancing the quality of life. The landscape framework plan outlines a strategic approach to site access that is informed by ecological principles, aiming to restore and support native habitats.
The remoteness of the location necessitated innovative data collection methods, including hands-on fieldwork and direct environmental assessments. The interventions were designed to be low-impact, utilizing local expertise to facilitate sustainable engagement with the land. The removal of invasive coastal shrubs, a new pier, and the integration of the airstrip to the larger estate development were the first implemented projects.
Work completed while employed at Reed Hilderbrand; Adrian Fehrmann was the Project Manager for the Framework Plan and implementation.
